Seamus Heaney Library
The Seamus Heaney Library was opened in 2007 and is run by a dedicated team of parent librarians. There is a €5 membership fee that goes directly back into resourcing the library.
Increased literacy is proven to help academic scores!
Having a library is a rare commodity for a secondary school in this day and age and we like to encourage students to value it as such. That means using it!!!
The library has many resources, from the latest in teen fiction, to factual material for every subject. There are also study guides and college prospectus’ made available for student use as well as the odd magazine or two for those that just need to relax in a quiet place.
FACT: Roald Dahl used to taste new chocolate bars for Cadbury’s as a boy
What Else does the Library Do?
The library has started several initiatives this year to promote literacy.
Book of the Month is a contest any student can enter. Each month a new book is chosen and if a student can prove
they’ve read it they are entered into a draw to win €15 worth of book vouchers.
Library Monitors 5 students have been chosen to help out in the library with their thoughts and ideas on how to make the
library a better place as well as create a sense of ownership within school.
Accelerated Reading the library has worked with the English Dept to start this program with books already in the library
“I have always imagined paradise as a kind of library”
Jorge Luis Borges
Did You Know?
10—16 year olds who read for pleasure do better at school
Reading for pleasure is more important for cognitive development than their parents’ education level.
Reading books is the only out-of-school activity for 16-year-olds demonstrably linked to securing managerial or professional jobs.
You Can Help!
Since the library is self-funded and run by volunteers we can always use help.
If you have the time and can help in the library we’d love to hear from you.
If you have any books that you or your teens have finished with you can always donate them here!
